Butterfly favorite!

Sweet almond bush is a fast-growing woody large shrub or small tree in the verbena family (Verbenaceae) native to South America. The Genus name honors Maria Louisa, princess of Parma and wife of King Carlos IV of Spain. The specific epithet refers to the long, thin branches of this plant. The common name refers to the almond-scented flowers.

In zones 10 to 11, it can be grown as a tree or shrub and will grow up to 15 feet tall and 8 feet wide. In zones 8 to 9 it will die to the ground in the winter and will regrow from the roots in spring. It prefers average to dry well-drained soil in full sun and can tolerate some drought. Blooms occur on new growth so pruning increases the number of flowers as well as controlling the size and shape of the plant. Deadheading promotes additional blooms.

This plant is grown for its intensely fragrant white flowers that occur in clusters from July to frost and attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It has an upright arching habit and thin branches.

Use in containers, borders or as a specimen in pollinator, night and cottage gardens. Plant where the fragrance can be enjoyed.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems:   Generally, problem-free grown outdoors. Those brought inside are susceptible to white fly, spider mite, and aphid infestations. Root rot can occur in too wet soils.
